Dr. Alvin J. VanderGriend - Biographical Sketch
Dr. Alvin VanderGriend is currently the National Facilitator of
Lighthouse
Ministries for the Mission America Coalition. Alvin's vision is for a
Lighthouse of Prayer on every street and an intercessor for every
person.
Alvin was born and reared in the countryside near Lynden, WA in the Pacific
Northwest. He graduated from Calvin College in 1958 and from Calvin Seminary
in 1961. He later attended Fuller Theological Seminary where he earned
his Doctor of Ministry degree in 1982. He is married to Carolyn De Vries
of Ripon, California. The Lord has blessed them with four children.
Alvin began his ministry as a pastor serving three different Christian
Reformed churches from 1963 to 1982. He then stepped into an executive
role with the Christian Reformed church and served as Minister of Evangelism
Resources for fourteen years. He is the principle architect of his denominations
effective Bible study evangelism program called
Coffee Break, wrote
Discover Your Gifts, developed a men's Bible study program called
Men's Life and developed a small groups strategy. In 1996 Alvin
became director of HOPE Ministries (
Houses of Prayer Everywhere)
where he developed the
Lighthouse strategy, created
Lighthouse
resources, and provided prayer-evangelism training. He also taught prayer
courses at Calvin Theological Seminary.
Dr. VanderGriend has written several prayer evangelism books including
Houses of Prayer Everywhere, Make Your Home a Light-House, How Do I
Pray for My Neighbors, How to talk to God and has co-authored the
popular
Praying Church Sourcebook. He also co-founded and chaired
of the Denominational Prayer Leader's Network in the U.S. and now serves
as a member of America's National Prayer Committee.
Dr. VanderGriend and his wife live in Washington state.
